Kombucha is a fermented drink prepared from an infusion of green tea or black tea, but does kombucha really have caffeine?

What is caffeine and theine

Caffeine is an antioxidant that behaves like a psychoactive drug, a stimulant of the central nervous system. It was discovered in 1819 as a component of coffee. For its part, theine is the same molecule that is present in camellia sinensis tea.

Caffeine is present in different plants such as coffee, tea, guayusa (guarana fruit) or yerba mate. In humans, caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant that produces a temporary effect of restoring alertness and eliminating drowsiness. Caffeine is the most widely consumed psychoactive substance in the world. Caffeine has diuretic properties. Excessive consumption can cause insomnia, nervousness, excitement, reddish face and gastrointestinal problems. Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor, so it can relieve headaches, but it is contraindicated in cases of high blood pressure.

How much caffeine does it contain…

There are different drinks that contain caffeine naturally or added. In the following table we show a summary of the most common ones.

  • Espresso coffee: 212 mg/100 ml
  • American coffee: 45 mg/100 ml
  • Black tea infusion: 25-100 mg/100 ml
  • Green tea infusion: 8-16 mg/100 ml
  • White tea infusion: 1 mg/100 ml
  • Yerba mate infusion: 68 mg/100 ml
  • Rooibos infusion: 0 mg/100 ml

The amount of tea contained in kombucha will depend on the type of tea used, green or black, the infusion time and the amount used. In general, fermented kombucha contains about ⅓ the amount of caffeine as the tea used . In a preliminary study carried out by Mun Ferments we have verified how during fermentation the protein concentration can drop by up to 20%.

The rest of the MUN KOMBUCHA varieties are below 3 mg/100 ml, so it is practically a caffeine-free kombucha. Only people hypersensitive to caffeine will notice any effects.
